Systems that do not talk to each other.

It is common for an operation to accumulate, over the years, a WMS from one vendor, automation equipment from another, and an ERP from a third, each with its own integration logic. The result is fragile point-to-point integrations, no central orchestration, and no single view of what is happening in the operation in real time.

A well-designed orchestration layer (WCS) solves this without requiring you to replace any existing system: it sits between the WMS and the equipment controllers, standardizes communication, and feeds a digital twin that represents the real operation on the control-room screen.
